Figure Master (1925-1992) Not only was this Polish born artist a genius of the human figure, he also helped and inspired tens of thousands from all walks of life to express themselves by creating their own masterpieces. Grant was incarcerated at both Auschwitz and Mauthausen concentration camps while still in his teenage years. As a survival tactic during his incarceration, he drew greeting cards for the prison guards to send back home to their wives and girlfriends. A talent that may have saved his life. In the long history of the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition, few regional artists have equaled the record of Adam Grant, who was selected 33 times for the prestigious show, winning many of its top awards. Sometimes he showed the process of painting within the finished work. The Yellow Easel pastel (a Roulet Medal winner) includes a black-white sketch of the nude model tacked on the wall behind the same image realized in color. Adam has had a long record of national and international exhibitions. Many of his paintings are in the public collections of museums, universities, churches and corporations. Adam's widow, Peggy Grant, a New York schooled artist and artistic director of 20 North Gallery on St. Clair Street near the Convention Center, continues to exhibit her late husband's work in museums and institutes around the country. Her current mission is to show his "Holocaust Series" in Poland and donate some of the work to museums there, least we forget what freedom and liberty mean to mankind. |
